Communications Assistant, McDaniel College

Job Description:
Working as a member of the Office of Communications and Marketing, the Communications Assistant supports the implementation of communication and marketing strategies and initiatives for McDaniel College to ensure that the college meets its goals and objectives aimed at enhancing its reputation. The Communications Assistant is involved in the day-to-day administration of the college’s communications and marketing program, with a strong focus on public relations. This role requires an individual who is a strong writer and verbal communicator with a working knowledge of social media. Under the direction of the Director of Public Relations, the Communications Assistant supports marketing and public relations projects and activities, including drafting a variety of communications, from news releases and media advisories to email pitches and talking points, among others; assisting with media relations, including handling routine media requests; supporting the implementation of McDaniel College’s institutional social media strategy, including posting regularly to the main social media accounts; and performing research for planning and evaluating the college’s public relations and marketing efforts. This is a 35-hour a week, 12-month position that pays $18.90 an hour.

Specific duties include:

  • Work alongside marketing and communication staff to identify and develop public relations opportunities;
  • Research, write, and edit news media releases and other press materials, and assist in investigating and replying to news media inquiries;
  • Assist in the promotion of college-wide and campus events, and college news, such as college rankings, new degrees, announcements, etc.;
  • Handle publicizing routine student achievements (e.g. Dean’s List, graduating seniors, etc.) through hometown news releases;
  • Post online news content to the News section of the College’s official website (;
  • Assist in planning social media campaigns, drafting social media content, and managing the college’s institutional social media across various platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, others), including working with colleagues from across campus who maintain social media presences for their program or department;
  • Assist in supporting events with high social media needs, including Day of Giving, Admitted Student Days and other high-impact days;
  • Support the college’s social media strategy by monitoring social media accounts to ensure social media policies are followed and assist in reporting as needed;
  • Maintain faculty and administration files, media contact list, editorial calendars, social media guide and directory, and other files;
  • Create graphic materials to support event promotion and social media;
  • Arrange for and produce still photos and videos to supplement news releases and social media;
  • Participate in crisis communication execution, as needed;
  • Manage the work of student interns/work-study students, including posting campus events to external website calendars and assigning photo and video coverage of events for social media;
  • Check communication and marketing email daily and respond as needed;
  • Support director(s) in check request and other administrative and office functions, including ordering supplies, monitoring inventory etc.;
  • Track media coverage and compile monthly media reports.

Miscellaneous Duties

  • Be a collaborative and contributing member of the team with the willingness to take on a variety of assignments and see projects through to completion;
  • Brings out-of-the box ideas for positive publicity and placement, including on the institutional social media accounts;
  • Performs other duties as assigned, and will be required to work non-traditional hours, including evenings and weekends. Evening and weekend work increases during peak periods of the year including Move-In Day/Orientation and Commencement.


  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, such as communication or journalism, with a desire to work in the communications/public relations industry
  • Previous internship or related experience in public relations/communications a plus
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills with a hard-working attitude and the willingness to continually learn
  • Creativity and excellent organizational skills; detail-oriented
  • Ability to work well both individually and within a team setting
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher), PhotoShop, email marketing tools, social media, and desktop publishing
  • Familiarity of AP style writing and experience with digital photography and video a plus
  • Strong interpersonal skills and be comfortable communicating with a broad range of people – from media representatives and community contacts to faculty, staff and students

Working Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is routinely working in a normal office environment with minimal exposure to adverse conditions. The noise level in the work environment is moderate and work may occur at a workstation with other staff.
