Seeking a Communications Director to support the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Silver Spring, MD. Incumbent is responsible for strategic external and internal communication plans, activities and marketing of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) serving in the Headquarters of the Commander, WRAIR.
Directs all communications and public affairs activities for the WRAIR. Responsible for developing and managing WRAIR branding, developing and coordinating publications, as well as managing both Internet and Intranet content and presentation. Lead and coordinate all press-related activities, including press releases, press training, coordinating inquiries, message development and press outreach. Edit and review posters and abstracts for grammar and to ensure graphic consistency. Coordinate poster production for national and international sites and ensure consistent branding of the WRA112. Research and develop content for WRAIR external and internal communications including web communications, original articles, press releases, newsletters and annual reports, scientific presentations and other related education and public promotion material in collaboration with WRAIR scientific teams. Ensure dynamic content on Internet site management such as monthly news items and researcher profile and quarterly interest stories. Work with WRAIR CONUS and OCONUS sites to promote continuity in web communications. Provide content management for intranet platform, and work with WRAIR staff to ensure relevant content and appropriate access. Assist the Director and Deputy Director, WRAIR with Army reporting requirements and presentations, to include briefings, Executive Summaries, information papers, and other data call action items. Develop and write program brochures and general information documents. Responsible for developing targeted program information packets. Work closely with WRAIR Communications and Graphics Department to coordinate web and print communications, as well other communications needs. Promote communications and information exchange within the WRAIR and affiliated researchers, and other collaborators. Help develop and ensure the use of graphic templates and promote communication consistency within the WRAIR at its international sites. Assist with preparing presentations and posters, and other communication materials for scientific meetings. Coordinate presentations and documents for director/deputy director and other staff as needed, often under deadline. Coordinate and compile relevant facts, figures, statistics, and information for use in documents/presentations. Works closely with authors and senior management staff to ensure that high quality publications/presentations are generated to reflect favorably on the WRAIR. Serve as liaison with other departments and organizations and institutions to request or to furnish publications, documentation, and or other relevant information. Performs other duties as assigned by the Director or Deputy Director, of the WRAlR. Nonessential Duties. Provide assistance with international site communication activities. Perform related duties as necessary.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Experience with developing and executing communication and marketing strategies. Knowledge of medical research and the military medical community; excellent written and verbal communication skills; proven ability to work within a team environment and interact well at all levels of an organization. Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple program priorities. Requires strong creative, analytical and problem-solving skills.
Minimum Education/training requirement: Bachelors degree with major coursework in Marketing, English or Journalism, or a related field; courses in basic science desirable.
Minimum Experience: 10- 15 years experience in managing communications programs including writing, editing, and public relations, preferably in health care and/or research. Knowledge of Microsoft applications essential.
Physical Capabilities: Requires periods of sitting and working at a computer. Limited International and domestic travel may be required.
Work Environment: Office environment.
